Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Friday, 27th June, 2025

  1. Tinubu Signs Four Tax Bills Into Law

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday gave Presidential Assent to the four Tax Bills to become Law.

Naija News reports that this was done at a ceremony held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The tax bills include: Nigeria Tax Bill; The Nigerian Tax Administration bill; National Revenue Service (Establishment) bill; Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill.

One of the four bills is the Nigeria Tax Bill (Ease of Doing Business), which aims to consolidate Nigeria’s fragmented tax laws into a harmonised statute.

By reducing the multiplicity of taxes and eliminating duplication, the bill will enhance the ease of doing business, reduce taxpayer compliance burdens, and create a more predictable fiscal environment.

The second bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, will establish a uniform legal and operational framework for tax administration across federal, state, and local governments.

The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the third bill, repeals the current Federal Inland Revenue Service Act and creates a more autonomous and performance-driven national revenue agency— the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). It defines the NRS’s expanded mandate, including non-tax revenue collection, and lays out transparency, accountability, and efficiency mechanisms.

The fourth bill is the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill. It provides for a formal governance structure to facilitate cooperation between revenue authorities at all levels of government. It introduces essential oversight mechanisms, including establishing a Tax Appeal Tribunal and an Office of the Tax Ombudsman.

  1. We Will Take Over The Street Immediately Tinubu Concludes Inaugurations – NLC Threatens Total Shutdown Of Abuja

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to mobilise its members to shut down the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after President Bola Tinubu concludes his projects’ inauguration on July 3.

The state Chairman, Stephen Knabayi, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday.

Knabayi explained that the move was to draw the attention of the FCT Administration to address the area council workers’ lingering strike.

Primary health care centres were under lock and key, primary school teachers had been at home, and the six area councils’ secretariats were abandoned by the workers for months.

The primary school teachers and other area council workers had embarked on strikes over the non-payment of the minimum wage and a 40 per cent peculiar allowance.

The NLC chair, who described the development as “very unfortunate”, said that the area council chairmen left the union with no option but to shut down the FCT.

He recalled that the union had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the FCT Administration on June 13 to address the demands of the teachers, health workers, and other area council workers.

He explained that the ultimatum followed the resolution of the executives of the joint unions of the NUT, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and the National Association of Health Workers Union.

He noted that the ultimatum expired on June 20, and the NLC had yet to take any action.

  1. PDP Crisis Escalates As BOT Disagrees With National Chairman, Issues Fresh Directives

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the pronouncements made by the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, on happenings within the party, describing it as a gross violation of constitutional order.

According to a statement on Thursday by the Chairman of the PDP BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara, the directive by Damagum purporting to cancel the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled to hold on Monday, 30th June, 2025 and directing Senator Samuel Anyanwu to resume as National Secretary of the Party are null and void.

Wabara insisted that the National Chairman can not override the decisions of the National Executive Committee (NEC) at its 99th NEC meeting held on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025, and any attempt by Damagum to do so contrary to what the NEC agreed is a gross abuse of office.

The PDP BoT chairman, therefore, directed that the NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, 30th June, would proceed as planned, and that the Deputy National Secretary, Arc. Setonji Koshoedo remains the Acting National Secretary of the PDP.

He warned party members to resist any attempt to drag the party into an avoidable crisis.

Asked whether he believed the government feared demonstrators, Sowore said, “I do. I do completely. They are afraid of placards more than they are afraid of guns, because they have the capacity to respond to people who are shooting at the government, but they have no capacity, they have no ability, and they have no strategy to stop the majority.

The suspect was nabbed Sunday, January 12, while trying to dispose of the head of the deceased after killing her and dismembering her body parts when she visited him at his house.
