We’re grateful to Donald Trump, but he should not interfere in our legal process – Yair Lapid
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid responded Thursday morning to U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s remarks calling for the cancellation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial, stating that while Israel appreciates the president’s support, he should not interfere in Israel’s legal affairs.
In an interview with Ynet, Lapid said, “We are grateful to President Trump, but as MK Simcha Rothman said – the president should not interfere in a legal process in an independent country.”
According to Times of Israel, he added that Trump’s comments appeared to be part of a broader political strategy.
“I assume this is compensation, because he is going to bend Netanyahu on the Gaza issue, to end the war.”
Trump made his comments overnight via his social media platform, Truth Social, where he described the legal case against Netanyahu as “politically motivated” and called for the trial to be “CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero, who has done so much for the State.”
The corruption trial, which has been ongoing since 2020, includes allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust against Netanyahu.
The prime minister has denied all charges.
MK Simcha Rothman, a prominent figure in Israel’s judicial reform movement, also weighed in, agreeing that Trump should not interfere—yet expressing support for canceling the trial on domestic grounds
Lapid’s remarks reflect a broader concern within Israeli political circles about foreign influence in the nation’s judicial proceedings.
While Trump remains a highly influential figure in Israeli politics and is widely admired in certain segments of the Israeli public, leaders across the spectrum emphasized the importance of maintaining judicial independence.
“We thank our allies,” Lapid said, “but the rule of law in Israel is ours to protect.
